LASC Digital Marketing, Branding, and Communications Fellowship
Powering Up Online and Social Engagement for Sustainable Action in LA

The Los Angeles Sustainability Collaborative (LASC) is accepting applications from motivated Southern California Graduate Students for its inaugural LASC Communications Fellowship, established to explore the opportunities and challenges for advancing sustainability in Los Angeles through digital communications, marketing, and branding social media engagement.Through this fellowship, LASC fellows will not only advance an emerging field of research, but will also explore the real-world application of communications, digital marketing, brand building, and behavioral theory in the area of environmental sustainability and civic engagement. Ultimately, the LASC believes this fellowship will help establish a pilot strategy to guide government, private sector, and non-profit partners in activating public support for programs and policies that advance environmental sustainability.

For this inaugural fellowship, LASC’s Communications Fellow will use LASC itself as the case study, and is tasked with reimagining LASC’s brand and communications strategy. More specifically, the Communications Fellow will (a) assess LASC’s current digital communications and marketing strengths and challenges, (b) assist LASC in building its digital brand, (c) establish social media goals and benchmarks, and (d) create transformative recommendations that can help the LASC build a more sustainable Los Angeles. The Communications Fellow will also be asked to consider more broadly, the challenges and opportunities for digital communications, marketing, and social media engagement to help Los Angeles transform itself into a more sustainable and prosperous region.

Since 2009 LASC has been serving as a matchmaker between academia, nonprofit organizations and policymakers—pioneering a model of collaboration and problem solving by facilitating research, informing stakeholders, and providing solutions to emerging environmental challenges.

LASC bridges the gap between environmental activism and academic research, while fostering and empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. LASC’s unique model of collaboration with community organizations positions us to identify and support nascent environmental leaders through research fellowships, small grants, and valuable professional development opportunities.

 

Benefits of a LASC Fellowship:

  • $1,000 fellowship monetary award.
  • In addition to guidance and oversight from the LASC itself, Fellows are provided with access to a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) that is comprised of leaders and experts in the area(s) relevant to the research project. Through the TAC or otherwise, we provide support in accessing critical data.

 

Fellowship Selection Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduate student with good academic credentials who is an excellent writer and researcher.
  • Applicant must demonstrate commitment and interest in communications in the nonprofit sector.

 

Application Process:
Each applicant is asked to submit the following:

  1. Completed Application Form (Appendix A) – submit your brief application to proposals@lasustainability.org
  2. Resume, including GPA.

Interview: Finalists will be interviewed by members of the LASC Research and Programs Committee.

Applications Due May 26
Interviews (either a call or in person) First week of June
Fellows Selected and Notified Week of June 8th
First deliverable delivered July 31
Final deliverable submitted By September 21st
Presentation of findings TBA
